Mountain Rescue Teams Respond to 2 Incidents [20-AUG-11]
In the first of two incidents on Saturday August 20, Mountain Rescue were put on standby by the HSE around 2pm to come to the aid of a mountain biker with a dislocated shoulder. The incident happened on a popular mountain biking area of Ballinastoe Wood in Co. Wicklow.
The HSE ambulance crew were able to deal with the casualty, thus a full team callout was not required.
The second incident occurred at 4pm; The Gardaí requested the help of the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team to come to the aid of a lone walker in Wicklow.
The man had walked from Glenmalure and summitted Lugnaquilla, Wicklow’s highest mountain. As the weather had deteriorated on the summit, when the man was descending he becme disorientated and ended up in the Military firing range*. He alerted the Gardaí by using his mobile telephone. Rescue base was set up close to the Seskin Army office, where 4 hill parties were dispatched on to the hills with personal from the Irish Army** to locate the missing man.
At approximately 7:15pm he was visually located by a search party at he base of the North Prison Cliffs. He was met by team members at 7:30 pm and escorted safely off the hills. Although uninjured, the man had spent a lot longer on the hills than he had anticipated.

Notes:
* The military firing range of the Glen of Imaal is a live firing range and is known to have unexploded ordinates. If a member of the public strays into the firing range they are requested not to touch anything that may look like an unexploded shell or ordinate.
** For the safety of mountain rescue team members, they do not enter the military range when involved in a search without an escort from personnel from the Irish Army.
